Could anyone give me a quick explanation.

I have primo and greyhound cabbages in the plot at the mo, how long will they last?  Do they bolt when they are past their best then? I know their summer cabbages.

What are winter cabbages?

and

What do I need to grow for spring greens?

  this is a goodie  :tongue2:

Greyhound is a small pointed variety.  Quick to grow, tight heads.  They are sown in early Feb under cover or March - July throughout the summer ... (I have also sown them late summer and managed to get them through the winter for an early crop in spring) We are very mild where we are.

The larger round varieties like Savoy and the round Red Cabbage for instance are a much tougher plant ... takes longer to grown and heart up ... and is sown late winter to mid spring in a seed bed ... then transplanted late spring/summer for crops winter to spring.

If you sow greyhound in a row without thinning it can also be used as spring greens !!  :D

Apart from sprouts, you can add in PSB - there is a summer variety and a winter one.  There is white sprouting broccoli too,  9* parennial broccoli for over-wintering, also the kales, and cauliflowers.

I have actually sown a whole assortment of brassica seed today for the 'Hungry Gap' and slugs and pigeons willing I should be OK !!  :tongue2:
