initially the best tool to a newbie, a clean stainless steel spade and fork, clean them fter you finish each day

knowing when to call it a day ,  dont over do things in the early months ,

if you start to hurt have a break , theres nothing that wont wait until the next day

a good sence of humour helps ,

start and end each day with the satisfaction that you have done enough for today , dont set your goals too high ,

After reading swing swangs comments I just ordered an azada from Amazon. I have just taken over a badly neglected allotment with tons of brambles and sadly a fair bit of bind weed in places. I am racing to get beds cleared and dug before the planting season arrives so I am hoping this might speed things up a little. I guess the real test will be if it allows me to get out the tough bramble weeds without chopping bind weed to tiny bits.

I am on the lookout for a five prong fork to turn the compost. They are not in the shops locally, and I haven't seen one in the carboot sales. Are they still made?

There's a knack to using them bigben, but you'll not be disappointed.

You might end up collecting them too - look out for them in Spanish/Portuguese hardware stores - about one third of the price.

You could always find a local blacksmith or fabricator who will knock one up for you?
