lime again
« on: February 03, 2010, 21:47 »
Hi

I'm pretty sure I have clay soil.  And I'm assuming it's acid. (ph tester on the way).

If it does turn out to be too acidic and I could do with some lime how much hydrated lime per square metre is about right?  Bearing in mind 1. that the plot is yet to be rotavated for the upcoming season and 2. That I'll be wanting to chuck plenty of well rotted manure on there too.

I've said 'hydrated' lime because I think that it's quick acting stuff that may be needed.

Thanks for any replies.

its one or the other.

Decide on what u going to plant and where on the plot.

ie pots don't like lime...they will scab but brassicas do.

pots like manure and so do brassicas.

Rotate it round the plot.

Top tip for camping....don't go.

I bought a box of Westland garden lime which was on offer at the time to use on the brassica bed. It says on the box to use 10 grams per meter squared which I assume must be correct. I don’t have a ph problem and am just using it to keep the ground sweet for the brassicas. Now 10 grams is not very much so if this is correct the box of lime will see me out and I’m not thinking of popping my clogs for a good few years (I hope)!

I assume you would use a greater quantity if trying to adjust the ph level?

I did read the link! But I also read the instructions on the Westlands box of lime. As I don't think I have a ph problem for brassicas I will not bother too much about it.

Thanks for the advice.

Please check your pH before you go about adding lime; once you know there are RHS tables that help you work out exactly how much to add [and it should have been added in the autun but never mind]

My pH is 7.5, so no need!

That's the only reason I refered you back to the link, as application rates are shown there :D

If you don't need to add it... that's great :)
