What's the risk?
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:02 »
Hi, I'm new to this growing thing! Would like advice please on the risk of contamination from dog dirt over the years into the ground, my dog goes in the garden,it is picked up but not instantly. I am now wanting to grow veg. in part of the garden, will I need raised beds that are lined on the bottom? Thanks

If it's veg to cook I wouldn't be too concerned - it's toxocariasis that's the nasty one i think, but it's destroyed by boiling - salad veg & fruit might be a bit more risky??

I wouldnt worry to much, so long as doggy poo doesnt get directly on crops.

Regarding raised beds, they are useful if you have very bad soil or poor drainage. What ever you do, do not line the bottom of the beds. It will act like a pan layer and stop roots getting deeper etc.
I can't see why or how the beds would help with the dog stuff tho.

It is illegal to use Jeyes fluid as a soil sterilant!

This has been discussed a lot on the forum and the mods don't like it being suggested.

Do i get a gold star??? :D

Being serious tho, i really doubt it needs any treatment like that. I would imagine once the mess is cleared and the area dug over it will be fine.
Our cats like to poo in the veg beds, it mostly gets dug in and i'm still alive!

That's good....ducks will eat the slugs and little beasties that I'm sure will zoom in on your veg! (Do slugs zoom....?)
