Shall I risk planting out....
« on: May 20, 2015, 13:00 »

I am going away for a week from Friday and have courgettes/squash/pumpkins just germinating to seed leaf stage, sweetcorn which is just starting to unfurl into leaves and kale/PSB/Brussels at first true leave stage - my quandary is should I plant out before I go or wait until I come back.

If I wait I am concerned that they may dry out

Thanks

Andy

If you haven't hardened off you still have a couple of days to harden off your brassicas and they should then be fine outside.
However I would not recommend planting out the squashes and sweetcorn - especially if they haven't been hardened off. Can you get someone to come and water them once or twice while you're away?

I would think the brassicas would be alright outside in a shady spot, but the corn and curcurbits I would water well, take into the house and leave them on the drainer out of the sun, with a wet towel under.
But as has been said somebody coming in to water is probably the best.

I concur with keeping them inside for now if you can. We still get frosts up here in late May. Water them well, turn the heating off, maybe re-pot temporarily into something oversized.

i would try to find trays to put the pots/ modules in. fill with water before you go and hopefully they'll have enough water until you get back.

avoid window sills and try to get the most even light you can.
