Hi folks,
I've been keeping my shallots long term in the loft where they are plaited and hanging from washing lines hung from the beams. I went to get a plait down today and a large number are producing sprouts. They are all the of the griselle variety, my other variety springfield are all ok. This has led to 2 questions
  1) can I plant the sprouters now (soil permittin), even though the variety is supposed to be planted in the late autumn?
   2) what can I do to prevent this happening in the future? The loft is really the only storage option and is considerably cooler than the rest of ourhouse due to being well lagged However I wonder if has still been unseasonably warm due to the mild weather in the last quater of last year  as evidenced by my spuds, some of which chitted up there in November, though of course for the last month it has been pretty chilly up there.

has the ice cap reseeded from Newcastle yet for planting you are a long way north

i would plant them once sprouting they will soon be soft and wasted

Plant them either directly in the ground, or temporarily in compost and then in the ground when it is fit.

They will not need much room in the compost so either put them in pots/modules or in a seed tray depending on how many you want to plant.
