I've got a Howard 200 - wonderful machine...... but what's a cutter bar? (Forgive my ignorance!!)

oops off to the naughty step

A cutter bar is like an old fasion hay machine. I will use it to keep the grass in the lane down and harvest the green manure.

I didn't realise that the Howard would take one of those... sounds brilliant! Ideal for grass paths too, I bet!  :)

If I thought I stood any chance of detatching the rotovator tines from the machine I might look out for one myself but my machine has been in one piece for donkeys years - not sure it would take to being in two bits  ::)

Kick it  ::)

If you look just behind the wheel gear box, as the casting necks down you should see a butterfly nut . Loosen it and push the two clamps apart and the rotavator deck comes off

I will bore you (and Trillium)with pics

Pictures would be brilliant and I'd not be bored at all!

I realised the rotovator could be removed and that there were a few attachments but not that there was a cutter bar (now I know what it is.... Learning all the time!)

I think I'll have a look to see how easily the rotovator comes off. Presently my Howard 200 is in the garage at home as we had shed break-ins a while back on the plot and I didn't want to risk it being half-inched. So.... this means a long slow walk to the plot and home again everytime I want to use it. Removing the rotovator and leaving it behind in the shed might make it quicker... maybe. (Surely no one would pinch just the rotovator part without the engine?)

Perhaps I'll just keep pushing!

Do you transport your Howard home or is it not used on an allotment plot?
Having just a pedal cycle and a trailer can be restricting for something as bulky and heavy as the Howard...

I can manage to move just over 100kg but the Howard is out of the question - might consider towing it

I leave nothing at the garden which is about 5 miles away but  I do have a transit, a couple of trailers and a renu van. I use a couple of ramps with howard but I can lift the small honda into the renu.

Those Howards are flipping heavy but make up for it in years of reliable service and ease of use.
Mine trundles along at a good pace on the pavements once I get it moving - about a 1/2 mile walk each way to the plot. It's better than risking it being "borrowed".

[The only petrol engines I use are in the rotovator, mower and strimmer]

Just fitted the bar and it works with no funny noises. Very smooth in fact.
But I seem to be missing a bracket which supports the front. So off to fabricate what ?
I have no idea as I never seen the bracket.
