The first thing I would ask fletcherbaker is where are you ? Depending on where you are depends on when the last frosts may be.

There are more experienced people on here but last year (I'm in Maidstone) I started chitting my charlottes and Kondors, both 2nd earlies,  on 15th Feb, planted on 4th April and recall (gave up on diary by now..) picking first lot end of June
Paul, Andrew, Kevin, Galen - My parents got bored of normal names in the end!

Hi Fletcherbaker,
If you have a frost free light place then you can start chitting now, (there has been quit a few threads on the matter recently) but do not put them in the dark.
Regards,
Chris (a baker by trade)

Might be cool to you, but maybe not the spuds.

If you're going to store them in the dark, it only wants to be just above frrezing, otherwise you'll end up with long white chits.

As stated, if in doubt, I'd set them up to chit, light & cool are the keywords.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

im sure that some people on here were saying that to be on the safe side from early frosts st patricks day is a good time to plant and to start chitting 6 weeks before, so anytime now then.
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Are you looking to bake your own potato cakes?. 47 years a baker and the wife still moans that there is never any bread in the house.

I planted on St Patrick's day last year, but that's down here in Kent....don't know if that would be a tad early for further north ? because you have later frosts than we do.

Hello Fletcherbaker
I’m further North than you in Lancashire and I aim to plant my early spuds on the 1st  April and if they are the earliest of early’s they are ready mid June. I usually end up covering them up a night or two to protect from ground frost which can be a pain. I have taken to planting some under cloches planted in early March which last year were ready towards the end of May.

Northern bliss.

I'm near Birmingham and I usually start planting mine the last week in March.
Last year I started the first week in March and got away with it, but it was a mild spring.
