Shallots on the shortest day?
No! Boxing Day for shallots!

Which just goes to show there are almost as many gardening customs as there are gardeners. I suppose Boxing Day was one of the few days workers were likely to have away from work and you can't do much before or after work at this time of year.............

I'm surprised DavidT.
I thought everyone knew onion seeds had to be sown between New Year's Day and Twelvth Night.........................................................

It must be something to do with your being west of the Grenwich Meridian.

Leave them, they are very hardy and this cold spell will be good for them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine seem happy enough, they were planted early/mid Dec and now have small green shoots poking out of the snow they don't appear to be the least bit bothered by the cold weather. Onions also look to be similarly unperturbed by the snow. The Aquadulce beans may well be different story once the snow goes and I can see them.
