Compost and fungus gnats?
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:34 »
Hi everyone.

I wonder if someone could offer some advice? I have in the past bought some great big bags of multipurpose style compost. But when I have used it to pot seedlings on I have suffered plagues of little black flies - which seem to be fungus gnats.

I had to buy some gnat off (horribly expensive). If this had happened once I would think it was rotten luck but it has happened more than once. Can anyone recommend compost for starting seedlings off and potting on that is a good all-rounder, not horrendously expensive and won't have problems like this and loads of little flies all around my windowsills? (Yuk)

Thanks in advance and sorry for the daft question.

I'll get shouted at for this as some will say there's too many nutrients for seed, but I've always used compost from growbags and never had a problem with germination or flies.

For finer seed, you can run it though a seive first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've had good results with mix sieved multipurpose peat-free half and half with coir fibre. Watering from below helps reduce the fungus gnats. A bit of yellow sticky trap mops up any that do occur...

using multi purpose compost ,

we usually add a litre of perlite and 1/2 bucket of sharp sand

we end up with a free draining compost no flies and no mould / fungi

Thanks everyone for all your advice I am going to try a few of them. One further, and probably daft question, is sharp sand the same as normal (beach) sand?

Thanks in advance

I know it's not the same as beach sand - it's coarser overall without the finer grades you would find in beach or builders sand - and you need to make sure you get horticultural sharp sand not buiders sharp sand which is full of gravel-sized bits (guess who bought the wrong one for the lawn....). Sure there's someone more expert on it who'll clarify further!

Thanks Savbo

I have some beach type sand. I'm wondering if I can use that to improve the drainage speed.

Waste not, want not and all that..  ;)

It will be so full of salt..........problem 1
Problem......... 2 wet beach sand clogs together ( that's how you make sandcastles) and you want something to add airspaces to your soil not clog it up.....that's why you use coarse sand or grit, it doesn't clog together.

Not what you wanted to hear I think :(

Hi Mumof Stig,

Many thanks!

It would have been nice (and cheap) to use what I have, but better to know before I make the mistake and try to use it and end up with soggy soil as well as soggy fruitcakes!  ;)
