Too early for leeks?
« on: December 29, 2009, 09:45 »
Is it too early to sow my leek seeds in a tray? I will keep the trays in a small, unheated greenhouse until they reach the correct size for planting out.

I read that some people sow their leek seeds on Boxing day. An urban myth or a wise move?

 :)
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

I start sowing alliums in small handfuls from Boxing day onwards [this year I started a few days earlier] and as the majority in each pot germinate, they are put into the greenhouse to grow on. I start with onions, but once they are up the leeks come soon after. It means smaller space indoors and less earache from the OH.

I'm afraid I can't be doing with messing about in drib & dabs & do all mine in one go, sowing in early March.

This is how I do it:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sowed some early this year as a trial & half of them bolted. So I'm biding my time.

Unless you want leeks for late Summer/Autumn, or for exhibition, there is little point in sowing until March/April.

I sow mine in open ground mixed with spring onion seed. Pull the onions when they are big enough. Leave the leeks to grow until they are big enough to plant out in early July. You can also pull some of the leeks for salads leaving the leeks at 1 inch spacings.

I would have leeks all year, they're my fave veg.

Seeds sown in trays earlier, hope to have them in the ground by April, just as my current crop is coming to an end. Then I'll sow more for over winter.

It makes sense to me.  ;)

I will start my onions and leeks this week.  I do this every year at this time - between Christmas and New Year.  I leave them in the conservatory - not heated.  When they poke their little heads up, I will then move them to the greenhouse.

March - cold greenhouse.

They can either like it or lump it!

Don't believe in molly-coddling veg that will sit out all winter in all weathers.

Look at the problems some folk had earlier this year with unsuitable veg such as brassicas in heated propagators.

Yes - the "Why are my cabbage leggy?" season is approaching. But I digress.

I sow in batches as I sow everything in batches; so that I can sow more over a longer season.

Makes sense to me.

I'm bad with sucessive sowings, due to my life style! (I go away a lot and can't guarantee being at home when the next lot's due).

Something like leeks I don't see as a problem - one big batch sown in March and they'll still be around when I sow next year's.

I sowed in mid Feb last year, put them in a tray in the porch and got them off to a great start but more than half went to seed. I dont know if it was the warmth of the porch, the soil or lack of water but others I sowed later did better but were smaller. I plan to leave it a bit next year before I sow.
