Asparagus Bed
« on: December 04, 2009, 21:44 »
Thought its about time i had an asparagus bed so have allocated a 12inch deep 1.2m square raised bed for it  :)

As ive read on here before the spacing seems to vary so how many crowns would i fit in there? i was thinking 4 ??

Also anyone got a link to some where that sells that smaller amount please.

And any tips for a totally newbie asparagus bed owner would be fantastic. Would love to ge the soil mix right from the beginning.

My mouth is now watering thinking of some nice fresh asparagus now mmmm.

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Have a look at the growing asparagus page on this site for starters

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, four sounds about right.  However you will only get a very few spears at a time - never a proper serving.  That is the problem with asparagus - you really need to plant a large bed.

I think you`d get 6 crowns in that space. They are on sale now, try your local GC. :D

Having read the asparagus page, I'd argue with the need to fleece - my plants are over 20 years old and I've never experienced frost damage. As to the number of crowns needed - it depends of course on how many people you are feeding, and whether you are happy to eat spears of different lengths together. I've reduced to 7 plants which gives the two of us as much as we can eat in April, May and June.
