Death
« on: November 26, 2009, 16:46 »
Opened up my warrens this morning to find one in a poor shape, eyes closed, breathing heavy and no movement hardly, took her into the shed and got our resident chicken expert over who said she would probably die and to keep her somewhere safe until she did. I sat coaching her and she died on my lap. i guess it was a happy life i gave for short time, there is only 5 of the crazy 66 now. Our chicken expert reckons she got the pip the other day in the rain as she was heavy malting and it got a cold which done her in over night. the others are fine but i find myself quite sad about it(something i thought i would never feel for a chicken) and thought i should post.

We are all entitled to feel sad when an animal we have cared for dies.

It's what makes us human lightyears :)

Sorry about your little girl light years. Losing a pet does get to you. I still really miss my cockerel Little Red. Hugs xx

Sorry to read that - I know how you feel. Your bird had a 'good' death on your lap. I recently had a bird who was clearly going to die soon (injured). I didn't think that she was in pain, but wasn't sure and so asked a neighbour to kill her; which she did competently, but I still wonder if I should have allowed her a natural death.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your little hen, sometimes they just die on you, it is so sad when it happens and chooks are notorious for hiding when they are poorly. Take comfort in the fact that you were there and made her as comfy as possible :)
I have one now in my little hospital doing her best to pretend she is fine, one of my favourite late hatched chooks as well :(.. :(

No matter how you slice it, that was still your little girlie and you cared for her.  You go right ahead and mourn.  So sorry for your loss.  :(
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
