child friendly chooks.
« on: November 16, 2009, 17:31 »
Recommendations please everyone.  We are hoping to have three girls, but they must be fairly child friendly due to their being two wee boys running around and I want them to be involved as much as possible.  So what do you all recommend??  Oh and preferably ones that lay a fairly decent amount of eggs.  I particularly like speckledy types - eg scots greys, speckledys and marans but don't know enough about their temperament.  Cheers!

My hybrid speckledy has always been friendly :D   and a good egg layer but the warrens were even friendlier (greedier?) - the way to a chickens heart is through its stomach.

Hi I have a lot of pure breeds but my friendliest are my hybrids, too friendly sometimes they will follow you every where, let you pick them up, they  would be great with children,

We've only got hybrids, but the friendliest are the Bluebelles and the Magpie. We have a lovely Speckledy, but she hates being touched, squawks when you try and stroke her!

Pekin's are great with children and are almost instantly tame, they are positively relaxed when held by my youngest son! Funny looking chicks too with their big feathery slippered feet!
This is one of my son's pekin's Princess Layer

Thanks everyone.  Don't the feathered legged types take a lot of extra work??  Don't want to have to constantly be grooming my birds.  They do look fabulous tho!

you can get some bantems with naked legs. I have a couple of Plymouth Rock Bantems, they look quite similar to the photo above, but have naked legs. They're very good with my two lads (13 & 6 yr olds)

Must say so far my pekins have required no extra work, they are in a covered run and tend to choose not to go out in the rain. I have found them a easy to keep as my other bare legged girls, but they are soooo friendly!

We have 2 Cuckoo Marans a Coral Nick and a Columbian Blacktail. Although the Marans are nice birds I wouldn't say they are particularly friendly with us or our kids. However the Nick and the Blacktail definately are.
