I want to put some Basic Slag onto my Allotment Plots, can I manure at the same time/or will it cause a reaction?

Basic slag is a by-product of steelmaking and is mainly lime so the same rules as when applying other lime i.e you should not apply manure at the same time.

Basic slag used to contain a lot of phosphate when produced from the old Bessimer process but I think the modern furnaces produce slag with much less. It contains all sorts of trace elements, especially magnesium, manganese, copper and sulphur.

Where do you get basic slag?

Well I bought some basic slag from the gardeners association hut last weekend. Don't know that we'll be getting any more when what is on the shelf goes. It's not a fast seller.

I'm not surprised - think a re-branding exercise is called for  ;)

If it is old stock you may be lucky to have some with high phosphate with about 15% phosphate. Newer stuff is only about 2%.

It's old stock alright and I'm going to spend some time down the allotment gardeners shed on Saturday cracking a few jokes I think.  ;)
