Bare root Raspberry Canes
« on: October 20, 2009, 20:33 »
I ordered some raspberry canes on Sunday expecting to get them in November, but you've guessed it they arrived today. They are well packed and protected. Unfortunately I won't be able to do anything with them until Friday at the earliest so my question is, can I leave them wrapped and if so what is the length of time I can leave them without planting?

yes you can keep them wrapped for a few days, just make sure they are kept cool and that the root's don't get dry and they should be ok but the quicker they go in the better

Can`t you heel them in somewhere for now?

My bare rooted canes have just arrived from Kings seeds. The place where I want them to go isn't ready yet (it's too wet to dig), so I'm thinking I'll have to heel them in.

Any advice on good practice for heeling them in? Should I leave them bunched up as they've been packed, or separate them out? How long can I leave them heeled in before transplanting to the final location?

Thanks.

If they look at all dry give them a good soaking before you heel them in.  I would be inclined to separate them if you have room, but leaving them bunched up would be ok.   Dig a slit, put the canes in and cover the roots with soil.  It is usual practice to heel things at 45 degrees rather than upright, (but I don't know why).  You can leave them there for some weeks, but plant them in their final situation before growth starts.  Lift them carefully, as root growth might have started.

Cheers,

Gillie
