Planting Fava Beans is it to late or to early.
« on: October 18, 2009, 12:13 »
Hi. I have just found a packet of Fava beans that i bought this year. Is it to late to sow them. They are in date and not opened. I was going to buy some Broad bean seeds but as these are broad bean seeds anyway, i thought that i would save my money and give these Flava beans ago. I was intending to start them off in a propagator then set them out in the allotment. Do you think this is a good idea or not. Thank you for any advice.

Fava beans are broad beans. The variety Aquadulce Claudia is winter-hardy and now is the right time to sow. Other varieties can overwinter but probably need protection and are better sown in Feb/march.

If you plant now they will emerge by Christmas but stay at about 1 inch high until the Spring. Winter sown will give a slightly earlier crop than Spring sown.
