If not then whats the best way, just cutting under a leaf pairing and popping them in some compost??

No you are not too late!
Rather than describe how to do it I have found some photos, which I hope helps.

Mine usually strike very easily tbh.

Thanks for the reminder to do this. :)
I like to take some cuttings every year in case the ones outside don't make it through the winter.
But must admit that have only lost the white ones over the last few years, so now have quite a few pinky, red and mauve ones :)
Going to sow blue ones in the spring :D

I have great success with the finer leaved penstemon (especially Raspberry Ice), but am having difficulty with one called Czar and another one called Plum Jerkum.  I have taken lots of cuttings of these and for a week or more they look healthy and then droop and die.  I use the same method as the link provided, although I do add some perlite or grit to my compost.  The Raspberry Ice take every time, but the other don't.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I should also like blue ones.  I bought one a few months ago, which I was led to believe was blue, and it is scarlet red.  Maybe I shall try the seed method.
