Some people say to soak the individual cloves before planting garlic other say its not necessary.

Whats the general consensus out there?

Regards and thanks in advance.

I have never soaked mine, but I have very heavy clayey soil.

I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

Never soaked mine either and they have always done really well.

I've never even heard this suggested before - no soaking for me  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

(I don't soak peas either!)
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I soaked mine this year as the soil was a bit dry and I didn't want them just sitting there waiting for rain. Worked well and they're up now. If the soil was wet I wouldn't have bothered.

I wouldn't bother either. when it's time to plant garlic then there's usually a lot of rain in that period, or very soon after.  Garlic doesn't like to swim because it rots quickly. Perhaps greendavie's original advisors had very sandy soil.

Never soaked, ever
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

I've soaked before - in epsom salts and got really good quick root growth.

If only I could remember to do it each time I would. They certainly rooted before the ones that went straight into the soil

I think the trick is to plant early as the cold weather encourages the cloves to split
