Rabbit and Guinea Pig Poo
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:02 »
Is Rabbit and Guinea Pig Poo mixed with shavings and hay any good as compost? Ive been offered a good supply by a breeder for when my new lotty gets the official nod.
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

The poo is very good, but it shouldn't have too much wood shavings with it (wood uses up the nitrogen in the compost). If there's a lot of wood, I'd make a separate pile, and when broken down use as a mulch, a bit like leaf mould.

The guinea pigs, on the other hand, are very good for the compost, or so I've been told . . .   ::)

I've used the pooh, wood shavings and hay from my rabbit over the last 9 months and my compost looks fab. but then anything would look good compared to my soil! :tongue2:

My Mrs has 40+ guinea pigs, she breeds and shows and we've been using the poo for a while now and its been the best stuff we've used so far and we have fellow plot holders cueing up for bags.

We just dig most of it in as its really improved our soil, the rest is composted and takes about 6 months to rot down, shavings and all.

Not familiar with guinea pig poo but rabbit stuff is fabulous without shavings, the only poo you can use fresh directly around plants. In winter I get a lot of rabbits around my pigeon coops so I scoop up the droppings and dump them around my flowering bushes and such ready for spring. Otherise its very hard to find those droppings in the grass
