The advice about picking from the bottom first isn't as true as it used to be. Modern varieties have been bred to suit the commercial grower who wants to harvest the whole lot in one go. If you want a long season of picking then you need to choose one of the old non f1 hybrids.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

Sorry jj, my other post did'nt really answere your question.
Just pick the ones that are ready or they will start to blow. The others will come in their own time.

This is interesting.  For some reason I thought you had to pick the whole stem and then use them.  I am silly!

You are lucky.  My Brussels usually burst when they are as big as a grape.  Anyone know why?  I have tried firming the ground, no manure,  The variety I use is F1 Eveshum - is that the problem. :(

I noticed the first 6 where ready yesterday on mine (brolins).

So took them home and steamed them slightly mmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

mine have finally got small, firm sprouts at the bottom The ones towards the top are still "loose" leave-life rather than sprout-like but hopefully will tighten up and form properly, but not expecting to harvest any for a month or so.
