hi all, i've just got an allotment, and never done this before. i've startd to double dig adding lots of well rotted manure for next spring's growing.
the thing is do i or do i not add maure to my root area where i'am going to sow my carrotts, potatoes etc next year as one book says don't and the other says do if it hasn't been dug before
so do i or don't i ??

personally i would say no!!!!!!!!!!!! why becasuse manure makes the carrots split. ideally you need well drained soil with a fine tilth, some sharpsand will help you there and maybe a few bags of good compost. keep the ground as fine as poss and hopefully you will have some amazing carrots!

I understand carrots and parsnips and onions should be treated differently from spuds - read John's rotation info on the information pages!

Spuds are not a root veg - they are tubers! They are very hungry feeders and like a good dose of manure. Likewise onions are not root veg, they are bulbs.

It is generally advised not to manure for parsnips and carrots, as this can cause the fine tap root to fork if it hits a lumps of it.
