Another Broody
« on: September 22, 2009, 21:58 »
Hi Guys

Sorry I have not posted for a while, but i do still read daily, most addictive site  :D

I now have a another broody hen, she has been broody 6/7 days, she is on her own and has sat solidly.  The last hen I had I let sit on some of my duck eggs (I have a drake and 7 ducks), and at the end as nothing happend we got her some day olds, .

Now I am not sure what to do with this new broody, should I get some fertile eggs off the internet, or let her sit on non fertile eggs (just to give her something to sit on) and get some more day olds?  If I go for the day old option how long would you recommend she sits before doing this?

Thanks for all your advice,

Jo

Its getting very late in the year for hatching eggs and even day olds!  ??? is there any other way you could break her broodiness? (putting her in a crate with food and water, or turfing her off the nest often?)as if she has eggs she will be hatching them in October!

As Chickenlady said it is a bit late in the year for broodys, even with day olds.
I have had a few broodys over the past few weeks and just by removing the eggs daily they have stopped, the nights are drawing in and getting colder so instincts start to tell them that chicks will not survive.
