Centurion.

Hang on - there's a bit of an echo in here!

The onions in your photos look like footballs - not what I'm after.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Onions react to the amount of space they are given.

If you want kitchen size onions space them no more than 3 inches apart.

If you want whoppers space them wider.

Now here's a thought. Grow big ones, use half, then use the other half later.

Wider spaced onions are far easier to keep weed free.

I couldn't get a 6" wide hoe in between 3" spaced onions.

Here are my "footballs" earlier in the season.  Easy to keep under control.

I cook and I prefer the bigger onions  ::) they are easier to peel for a start, and usually more succulent, especially for salads  :D

I've just not been able to grow them that size yet :(

Classic Bouef Bourguignon and Coq au Vin both have onions about an inch across cooked whole in them.  If you cannot get onions this size you need to strip the outer scales off larger ones.

I have not grown onions for some years (white rot?) but I can buy them from a local organic grower who will sort out the size I want.

Onions 3 - 4 inches across are large enough for any dish.
