Worcester Pearmain Apple Tree
« on: September 19, 2009, 13:49 »
I've just bought a Worcester Pearmain Apple Tree but now I'm worried that it isn't a self-pollination variety.

I'm getting mixed info from online resources.

If any experts out there can shed light for me I'd appreciate it greatly.  Really want to get it planted but I'm holding off in case I should just swap it at the garden centre for a self-pollinating variety.

Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the swift reply tode!

But like I said I've had mixed information.  I've been on trees-online, that says it needs another tree.  However, ashridgetrees site says it's self-fertile?

confused.com!!!

Does anyone have just one of these trees?  If so, how does it get on?

IMO the Worcester Pearmain may give fruit all by itself, but will certainly give more, and better quality, fruit in the presence of another (fertile) tree, if flowering at same time.

Ashridgetrees:
"Worcester Permain is a self-fertile mid-season flowering pollinator (Group C). This means it will produce some fruit if planted by itself, but will crop better in the company of another pollinator. For more information on apple pollination and for good partners for Worcester Permain please take a look at our Guide to Fruit Pollination. Use September-October."

Two trees = more apples to eat  :D  :D  :D

Probably stating the obvious here but if you do decide to get another tree (you will get better pollination if you do) make sure it's in the same group i.e. that they both flower at the same time  :)  Worcesters are a lovely apple imo

Worcester Pearmain isn't class as self pollinating by anything I have. Not sure there has been a self fertile developed.

Being safe I would say that you will need a second variety in order to get a better crop.

I don't know anything about pollinating Worcester Pearmains but when my wife and I were married (41 years ago) we had a single apple tree in our garden and I asked an expert to tell me what varity it was. He said it was a Worcester Pearmain and while it was only small it always had apples and they were delicious. I've a good mind to plant one on the Lotti now you've reminded me.

PS  the second apple tree doesn't have to be yours, of course. If the neighbour's got one not too far away, it's just as good .....  ;)

Thanks for the feedback all...

I've decided to keep it.  The 'apple-guy' at my garden centre tells me as long as there is a flowering tree, from the hefty list he had, within half a mile it should be good.

So, I'm keeping it and if I need another I'll get one next year.  I'll let you know how I get on...
