OK, over the winter I plan to build a new coop for a potential 10 new girls in the spring.  As I let all my girls range free in my garden I don't need a run, and if they do need to be separated for any reason I have chicken wire and wood framed hurdles I can use as movable panels.

How much space do you need for each hen in a coop (I'm looking at large fowl - orpingtons, legbars etc)

Would 2mx1mx1m be OK (this would give about 4m of roosting space)

Even a coop this size is going to cost a fraction of the one I bought (which is a little smaller than this) and it will be much more accessible (one of my first design "must haves")

Is that wood thick enough to make it strong?

Well I planned it out using 33x33mm, but will probably be using 45x45mm.

I'll be cladding it in 5mm exterior ply, which I just have to price, but it may end up costing around 100euros in total, which is a third of the price of the coop I bought.


I'm just wondering how far apart to put two roosting bars without blocking the nesting boxes.
