Radar Onions Question
« on: September 12, 2009, 14:14 »
I have never tried overwintering onions before but I have just brought some Radar and Electric (red onion) sets.

My allotment site rep said he wouldn't bother with overwintering onions because they don't store well like standard onions.

Any advice on storing overwintering onions would be greatly appreciated.  I am most interested in how long they will store for?

Thanks in advanced

It's not fair to say don't bother, but he's right about the storage.

Use them as a filler between last year's stored ones running out & next year's spring planted ones coming in.

You don't have to wait until they are mature to pull them up to use straight away, so a soon as they are a reasonable size, if you need one, pull it up. They mature around June and don't bank on storing them for more than a couple of months.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

... Still eating our stored Radar onions....  :tongue2:
So far they've been fine.
We've got about a couple of dozen left and haven't lost one yet....

I grow them every year - radar and electric.

They mature earlier and I use them first.  I grow spring planted ones too wich I don't use until I've finished the over wintered ones.

We had great success with our noral summer ones last year, but last winter planted Radar and Electric.  Both varieties grew well, and we had a good crop yield.  However, as other here have said they do not store as well.  We would agree use these as a gap fill when your summer onions have run out before the next seasons ones are ready.  That is what we are doing now, but Radar and Electric seem to be fin e for this purpose.
