Shade lovers?
« on: September 07, 2009, 16:11 »
Another question from the new girl... seeing as everyone's so helpful  :)

I've got a fairly substantial side return in my garden, and its currently redundant, as it doesn't really get any sun.  Are there are veg plants (or fruit for that matter) that would manage well without a daily dose of sun rays?

I believe you can plant blackberry canes on a north-facing wall which wouldn't get any sun. As for veg, I'm not sure but others may be of help. I wonder if late carrots or root crops such as parsnips, and brassicas such as swede would do. I'd try it and see - there's nothing lost but a few seeds.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think rhubarb is happy in less sun
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You can grow quite afew things without direct sun, but they all need a good level of light.
Anything you can do to increase the light?

Black currants will also tolerate no sun, toms will take part shade but yields are less.
