Storing Swede

I had a good crop of Swede this year and three of four weeks ago I lifted some and stored them in sacks. They're still fine to eat but are starting to go soft. My wife says if they were in supermarket she wouldn't buy them and I have to admit Swede is always nice and hard to the touch whatever time of year you buy it.

Have I done anything wrong? I've left some in the ground but I'm afraid they'll get nibbled at by slugs etc if I don't lift them soon.

How long do you reckon to be able to keep Swede and how do you store them?

The ones I do manage to grow, I don't lift, They sit in the ground all winter.

It may be possible to store them, but in any event, you've lifted them early whilst they're still probably growing.

Anything that's not reached maturity is not suitable for long term storage.

Thanks Dave. I'll leave the rest and see what happens.
I think Swede is very under-rated veg and easy to grow.

I peel them and chop into cubes and freeze, it works well for me
