It's been a topic of discussion up here as some of the leek growers who save their own seed have found that they are getting both the bulblets and early flowering.

There has been much discussion over bought in compost and manure having affected the crop - comments about chemicals in what they have bought in affecting their stock as they haven't done anything different to what they have been doing for many years.

It's an interesting aside from those who specialise in leek growing from their own seed.

I sowed later than normal this year after a chat with one of the old boys who had loads go to seed last year, mine were sowed in April and transplanted a good few weeks later, no difference at all, although I have only had five turn out around 250 so not too bad.
Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Doubt it was to early, some of mine were sown in jan and I'm a smidge further south than you in the tundra otherwise known as tropical blackpool ;)

Ah Blackpool.....lived in Lancs until 20yrs ago Now living on the coast in NW Scottish Highlands...so certainly not lack of watering! I think I shall have to look at different seed varieties for next year although the  Mussleborough has done well for me in the past..

I have a few that have started to flower. We had such a long dry summer and with no mains water on my allotment it meant that certain plants was left to defend for themselves where water is concerned and leeks was one of them. :(
I thought they would be ok with them being a root veg but when i come to think of it they don't really grow downwards that's why we make a deep hole for them when planting unlike my carrots which are prize winners this year although i didn't water them.
