WARNING: Heat Lamps v Eletric hen.
« on: September 03, 2009, 16:27 »
I have had three batches of chicks this year so from the 23rd of March till the 17th of July I have had two heat lamps on for 3 month-ish (five weeks for each batch of chicks).
Why heat lamps well if one lamp goes another will be there (do not want them dieing of cold).
I have just had my electric bill in and they want to double my standing order!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have not told the wife about the electric bill. Oppps.
Anyway 2 *250 watt bulbs = 500watt
Electric Hen Low power 45 watts.

And the electric hen is cheaper.  OH well you live and learn.

Shhhh do not tell the wife.

omg I have had 5 of these on as we have a gas brooder at the holding but I kept losing a lot of the more delicate chicks so I have been rearing these at home

now have to explain  this to my husband when I have been  moaning about the lights in his fishtank

Just wondering.. why does it have to be a 'fireglow' bulb, and not an ordinary one?

I only use 60 watt 'ordinary' light bulbs, the downside is they are stopping making them soon  :(  so I have to stock up.

Because they are designed to give out heat. eg the name fire glow.

Sorry to argue the point but they are not.
They are simply  an incandescent tungsten filament bulb which is colour treated for use in electric fires under the rotator to give a flame fllickering effect.
They are no more a heat source than a plain light bulb of the same wattage.
Now retired from the day job and working hard on my smallholding.

That's a relief . This is what I used, I think. It was a 60 watt red bulb for a fire. Apparently the red light is softer and not so bright which is better for the babies.

You could always use the electric hen Ruff and save the bulbs for a back up.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Does anyone know if the heat only bulbs (ceramic dull emitter) are as electric hungry?

that's right, the red bulbs are less stressfull for young chicks than a normal bulb I think.

I'd like an electric hen to, but the size I'd need is a bit expensive!

Sometimes I use dull emitter bulbs which are supposed to use less electric, but I still have a red bulb on for them.

snap Raeburg!  Just mentioned them.
