Dieing Swedes
« on: August 28, 2009, 20:08 »
I'm really cross with myself as my Swedes are dieing in the ground from ...

...  drought.   >:(

It's been hot and dry here for so long.  I've watered the beans and salads but completely forgot that Swedes need moist conditions  :(

There are some drawbacks being down in the south east  ::)

Please don't worry Auntie, I've yet to pick a runner bean, Seven out of fourteen have got to the top of their cane, and I've sprayed the flowers each night and given them, what I thought was a good  'shower' we have yet to pick a single bean. Only once have we grown a swede and it was so woody that we have never bothered again.

Mine are pathetic, despite the watering.

Good job Paula's got enough for everyone.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

All my corn was harvested so i pulled the plants out and was really surprised just how dry the beds were despite the watering every few days. So gave the swede and cabbages a really good soaking this evening. Bound to rain now :D

My leeks seemed to have suffered the same fate. The ground is cracked  and rock hard and despite raining a little bit I didn't think to water them until they looked dreadful. Some are pretty thin and wilted and suffering from rust :( so I've dug them up and turned them into leek and potato soup (used up the 'doubtful potatos :nowink:)  The later ones seem to have survived my neglect, hopefully.
It shows how much rain you actually need to make an impact!
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Hi Aunt!

Chucks are fine thanks..still laying well and nice and fat! A few starting to molt a bit but seem to be enjoying life..

Just about to re-do the huge shed inside.. way too big so keep an eye out for progress!
