French beans dieing
« on: April 30, 2022, 14:34 »
French beans.  The purple ones. Had brown bits on in the garden Room. Looked like they were burnt. Moved them outside okay at first but now looking like they aren't going to make it. Quite exposed spot and has been cold lately. Disease or just damaged by the cold?
Bit late for starting again??

All the bean family don’t like the cold.  Us soft southerners still have our beans in their packet.  I won’t be sowing mine for another 2 - 3 weeks.

Sowing them in pots or outside?
I suppose I could put an extra seed next to each plant.

I would not sow again until you are sure you are past your last frost.

Sow in the ground if possible. You can warm that ground by laying black plastic sheet over it before you sow, remove the plastic sheet when the seeds go in the ground.

Sown in the ground today, you would be harvesting beans in late June or early July. You should have growing season left for a crop or two.

In root trainers in the greenhouse.  Then hardened off in the cold frame before planting out after all danger of frost is passed.

We're not too far from you CC, ours will be sown in modules, allowed to germinate indoors then moved out to an unheated greenhouse before planting out. Normally sow somewhere around May 9th and they'll be planted out on the plot (depending on how warm it is) near the middle of June.

My french beans have just germinated in the conservatory. I will put them out in a few weeks subject to weather. One point I would add is the benefit of sowing a seed by the plant at the same time as planting out. This has often rescued my crop when the original plants are subjected to adverse weather or slug attacks etc.
Keep digging

Thanks all. I will start again with seeds in pots. The plants may recover if not I will have back ups. Will note down dates for next year.

I’d give up with the dying ones. I don’t think they will ever do well  :(

Just checked them and they look like they have had enough. So have the two cannellini beans I have put out.
On the upside sugar snap look okay.

Peas are much hardier than many common summer crops - I don't plant out courgettes, squashes, sweetcorn, runner and French beans until the very end of May here, and even then a cold spell can put them into a sulk - the more the (usually night-time) temperatures are below around 10C the more prolonged the sulk. A ground or air frost will almost certainly kill them outright of course.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

SOWED new seeds yesterday. One of the advantages of using premier seeds!
Wonderful weather today. Would have been a great day for planting out.

I sowed my french and runner beans today into loo roll tubes. I'm on the south coast, so my last frost will be sooner than yours.

My french beans are now outside the conservatory enjoying the sun but will come back in tonight. Contrary to my previous comment I am starting to wonder whether I should risk putting them down the plot next week. Latest forecast says we are due for a heatwave with daytime temperatures heading for 23 or 24 Celsius. Also report on tv saying spring is several weeks ahead of normal. Question is do I risk it ??.

Today have planted out my French bean Violet. They had reached a good 18 inches in height.
Will be planting out the Blue Lake early next week too.

Both were sown in greenhouse on April 9th.
