Add another or leave things as they are
« on: August 27, 2009, 17:23 »
Very new to keeping hens - last Saturday - and this is my first post.  Got three Goldlines from the local farm and almost at once one of them started picking on one of the others.  Drew blood and the farmer took it back.  That leaves us with two who get on very well.  Should we leave things as they are for the moment beofre thinking about adding another or get another from the same flock before pecking order is too well established.  We have another run in which to segregate.  I am off work next week and can oversee the arrival but after that it will be October before we could do anything and by then the nights will be drawing in and it will be getting colder.  Couldn't get much wetter here in Devon, so, that's no more of a problem.

all depends on how many eggs you want!  It's never easy to introduce 1 hen, there will be some bullying and as you saw, it can be nasty.  if you really want more and have room you could go for 2 that get along already?   :)
