Greedy chicken
« on: August 24, 2009, 19:41 »
Hello We are proud new owners of 4 POL chickens who are doing ok - not laying yet.  There is one we call Queenie (as she is clearly the boss) just a bit concerned about as she is eating like an absolute crazy chicken and the others can't get a look in.  She also has diarheea.  Is this normal chicken behaviour or should we be concerned?

Cut out the treats for a while and just give them the layers pellets with oyster grit to see if the diahorrea settles down. It would be an idea to have a couple of feeders in different parts of the run to give the others a chance of eating, she may just be asserting her position as top hen.

we have one that is incredibly greedy, she has to disrupt the others when they "find" something we have given them all. it matters not that she has the biggest pile of food, she just has to check that none have more than she does.
its laughable.

the other chickens just keep out of her way for the first few minutes in a morning, and whenever we give them treats too, they just let her do her thing.

Were they wormed before you had them?
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Firstly what are you feeding them?
Chickens must have access to food at all time (apart from night).
Diarrhoea can be caused by eating to much fruit.

You should also worm your chickens I would suggest you use

There is never a normal chicken as they all have there own quirks. That goes for the owners as well. :D

Does anyone have any supplier suggestions for Flubenvet?  Had a quick look on Google and quite a range of prices.
