We hearvested and strung our onions this week.  They are hung in the horse box so are dry but with a good air flow.  How long roughly before we can use them?

I think you can use them straight away. I've grown my first from seed this year (Rjinsberger) and am chuffed to bits as there are some real big-uns. I found out how to string them so will be digging them up and drying in my shed unless we get a heatwave in the next week or two - ha-ha-ha - I don't think so.

you can use them straight away dry the onion until you think they are dry then dry them for another two weeks or you can string them up to finish drying make a loop of string then pull the bottom up so it makes extra loop put your first onion in that loop pull tight so string is tight on first onion then between the two bits of string add next onion and twist the dry top round string and pull down then crry on till string is full then do another string

Be careful that there is no moisture in the necks when you string them. The stems wound closely together can go mouldy and set off rots.

thanks for all the advice, I will check them now as some stems were a bit on the damp side.
