Buryings weeds
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:07 »
I remember reading an article on the net which said that on overgrown plots, de turf  (weeds and all) dig down 1.5 spits put the turf in the trench and fill using single or double digging method.

I'm not sure about this, has anyone tried it?

I misread that as BUYING weeds, I thought I was going to make a fortune selling them

If you cover them with woven black membrane for a year it kills most of them but if you bury tap root weeds you just get bigger stronger tap root weeds with very long roots

Grass will die off but be very careful not to incorporate perennial weeds like docks at that depth, they will grow back and be a nightmare to get of.

Hi Mc, I find that drowning them is the best method, then adding to the compost bin, I use a plastic bin with lid and leave them for 3-4weeks, stinks a bit, but seems to work.

Good Luck

Digging in annual weeds and grass is fine as long as the grass is not couch (stuff with the bootlace thick white root runs).

Buttercup, dandelion, thistle, nettle and dock need to be dried out and burnt as these are the little s**s that will come back up again if you bury them.

Only draw back to digging in annual weeds and grass is that you need to leave them burried until they rot rather than turn them up again when planting into the soil...so when you compost and when you dig in need to be balanced with when you next want to use that particular patch of ground. Dug in materials can take a couple of months to rot depending on the season.

Now I'm confused! ::) Hope this makes sense?

PS. Home grown weed for sale! I thought I'd establish my business before Poolfield2 corned the market!

I wouldnt have thought burying the tops would let them regrow, does it?

I empty the contents of my lawnmower into a pit I dug, or just dump it on a spare bed.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

If the natural way works and digging in annual weeds kills them then you save money, add nutrients to the soil as well as avoid adding anything that kills.  ;)
