creosote substitute
« on: August 15, 2009, 16:12 »
Hi
We are in the middle of clearing the hen house of red mite, we have taken the roosts apart, jeyes fluid the whole house and completely washed it out, we have also creosoted the whole house. I have been onto Bowden and knight who were very helpful and they have recommended we use Ficam w.  I have read somewhere that if you use creosote this could be good enough, or should I use the ficam w aswell?
Would appreciate any feed back on this! :D

I'm sorry Brenda but we cannot give you advice about creosote on these forums as it is illegal for amateur use.  It can only be used by professionals to re-treat already creosoted wood in an industrial setting.

Perhaps you mean creosote substitute ?

I've changed the title of your topic to say that Brenda.

I'm sure there will be people along soon to give you some advice about it :)

I use paraffin  :)  but I'd imagine creosote sub's would do just as well as the old stuff, just remember to make sure it's dry and well ventilated before  the hens go back in, thats why I use paraffin no bad stink and seems to kill mite no problems just brush liberally into the cracks and nooks

Thanks richyrich7,
there is a bit of a stink at the moment but I'm sure it will clear in a day or so. Must remember to use parafin next time!! ::)

Hi Meterman
I use it once a year, at clean out time and then if I get an infestation I'll give a good painting around then. I don't think it has any lasting effect but ?
I generally don't get too much trouble from red mite.
I put crawling insect powder on the perch holders so if they hide under there I think that gets them.
I also have been known to use a blowtorch / electric heat gun on all joints.
The only proprietary powders I use are the crawling insect powder for under the perches and droppings board.
For the birds themselves I use something called "gold label get rid powder " organic kills mites lice etc on poultry, horses pigs , cats  etc.

cant recommend this stuff enough

Why is it all the good stuff gets banned!

Creosote was fantastic stuff but the substitute is not a patch on it, don't soak in so well.

Didn't know it was still available (professional)

The other is 'Cutless' by ICI treat at the beginning of the season on my hedge cut April/May and only
just needed a tiny clip yesterday. Can't find it any where now!

Probably because its either been found to be more dangerous than previously thought or it's simply to expensive to get it re tested and re registered under new EU laws

Add Sodium Chlorate to the list , if you use it buy what you find now

Sodium chlorate is now considered to dangerous for the environment.  It's very persistent,  it leaches sideways into other land, it is dangerous soil organisms and animals and to wild life and water life.  It has been totally banned due to this and not because no one wants to test it.
