Killing your cockerals
« on: August 13, 2009, 10:08 »
Well, at last it came... my neighbour came and knocked on my door last night asking me to come up with a solution for one of my boys.

Thyme is a very noisy boy.  He starts crowing at dawn (which is about 5am) and crows off and on all day til dusk.  Once he starts he will crow for up to 10 mins at a time, and to be perfectly honest I am sick to death of it myself (even having lived next door to a cockerel for over a year - Thyme is just extremely noisy).

He is also very aggressive with the girls

So... on Saturday he will be dispatched.  I am not looking forward to it at all, even though I had always planned on eating they boys anyway.

I had thought about using the "broomstick" method.  I have no qualms about plucking and gutting (I did a lot of disections at Uni), but I have never knowingly killed an animal before, and the thought makes me feel slightly sick.

Did anyones else feel the same way before their 'first time'?

Oh god yeah, I now have an agreement with a friend, he does the nasty business and I pluck and draw them, we both have birds so it kind of goes in turns. I have done it once but made sure someone showed me the correct way. I just wanted to do it as quickly and cleanly as poss. Godd luck I'd like to know how you get on
a mum is for life..not just for cleaning! ;@)

Good luck with it. I'd be very nervy but don't foresee being in your position anytime soon.
