onion flowers?
« on: April 25, 2007, 16:17 »
one of my onions seems to have a flower appearing on it...

my mum mentioned something about taking/nipping it off - yes or no?

i haven't grown onions before,  and if she has then it was a very long time ago!!

would have thought it a bit early for that, but yes, nip it off.  you don't want it flowering and making seed, unless you want to save the seed, but at this time of year, you want all the goodness going into your bulb

Seems very early indeed.  Did they over-winter?  Or were they sown this year?

Is there a Daft Step?  If so, I'd like to propose a referendum among the members to send you to it, Aunty.

I thought as much.  Early even for that but it has been unseasonably dry and warm.

They look very tall and spindly to have been overwintered.  Were they under protection by any chance?

But, yes, nip out the flowering stalk asap
