Cheap seeds - worth stocking up
« on: August 03, 2009, 11:13 »
Just been into my local Wyvale garden centre and they're selling all their seeds (veg and flowers, but not grass) at half price.

Most of the packets were 'Plant by 2011' so I reckon they should be fine for next year.  I've stocked up so I'll be really organised next year.

My main problem will be that I shall probably forget I've bought the seeds already and buy more when the time comes!

As a retailer of Mr. Fothergills I know that we only get a mark up of 20% from what we pay for seeds, so to sell them at half price, although we may get more sales, we would actually be making a loss.  Mind you I only have one retail outlet for seeds unlike Wyvale.

Re: Wyvale.  I read a post recently from someone who said their local Wyvale was closing down.

I've heard rumours (from a Wyvale employee) that they've been in serious financial problems so maybe they're trying to shift stock pdq to limit losses if they do go under.  Just a thought.

They usually have an end of season half price sale.

Our local one has reverted to it's former name of "Rowena", but still shown on Wyevale's store locator, where a note a lot do not go under the Wyevale banner.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My local wyevale has sold off seeds at this time of year for much less than half price, for the last two years, so I'm still waiting for that drop  ::)

I'm pretty sure that I was buying seeds for 20p per packet last year, and 50p for seed tapes for carrot and lettuces.  The only problem was that they were all spread across 2 large tables in crates - flowers on one and veg on the other - so trying to find something in particular was tricky   but once you had limbered your fingers up to get through them all, it was fun looking!!
God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done ;)

The Wyevale near me sold all packets at 50p each, mid August I think.

I hope Wyvale isn't closing as I've got one of those 10% cards and I'd miss my free cup of tea every month!!!

Although I have to saythat I asked for a wooden compost bin in our local one and they looked at me like I'd asked for a alien spaceship!

I don't think they're closing but they certainly seem to have hit hard times.

My 17 year old visited our local Wyvale which is in our village and asked about a Saturday job back in about May/June time.  The manager she spoke to was very keen and said she'd be ideal and could she bring in a CV.  I was with her and we were both left with the impression that as long as her CV was sound they'd definately want her.

This she duly did and then we waited ....... and waited....... and waited.  About 10 days later we went in again.  "Yes" they were still keen to have her but they were expecting a new overall store manager to start the following week and he needed to authorise it.

We waited...... and waited ........ and waited.  2 weeks later and it was the same story..... and two weeks after that and so on and so on.

Eventually, last week it was "Sorry, we're not taking on any staff but we've got your details and if we do we'll let you know".  Not much help as she's now missed the opportunity of a summer job.
