sweetcorn in compost pots, all gone wrong
« on: April 23, 2007, 19:16 »
:(

I bought some compost pots to sow my sweetcorn in as I had heard that they don't like their roots disturbed. I thought I could plant them directly in the ground, that way. However, due to the lovely sun over the past 2 weeks they've gone crazy, they are 3 or 4 inches high and  with roots coming out of the pots at all angles.

I've potted them on by putting the compost pots directly into some large pots. This in the hope that it won't disturb the roots too much when I need to take them out and put them in the ground, which I daren't do till mid May, as I'm sure we're due a last frost!

Am worried that they'll become very disturbed when I take them out to plant them out in a couple of weeks time.
trying to be organic...

have them in my (unheated greenhouse). The ones whose roots have gone crazy, I've potted up, tho ones that aren't so far along, I've left in the compost pots.

Sigh - I hope they're ok.

In your locale, I'd be tempted to harden them off in an open coldframe.  You might even want to risk some of them (hedge your bets) into final position, protected with ventilated cloche and/or fleece.

I'm probably not the best one to be replying to you though since I am trying sweetcorn for the first time this year.

Oh thats a shame I just grow my sweetcorn in old yogurt pots then when they are quite big, harden off beg May and then out the pot and into the
ground.
...no problem.
Mine don't seem to mind having their roots disturbed.

Watch out for the heat in your greenhouse - mine gets up to 35 deg C this weather. Keep them damp.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

they would be best in a cold frame with the lid wide open
feed the soil not the plants

They sound like happy sturdy little plants to me,you could start to harden them off for a few weeks and then leave in a cold frame,if you have one, until frosts are over in your area.If you have to plant out after hardening then you could try bottle cloches,at least at night.
