Butternut squashes and courgettes
« on: April 23, 2007, 15:36 »
Hi everyone, I'm new to the site.  I've been growing veg for a few years or so but have never grown courgettes and butternut squashes before.  Once planted do you just leave them to sprawl about or do they need canes - and if canes are used do they attach themselves :?: Your help would be much appreciated :D

... sort of form a clump and only start to wander towards the end of the season.  Butternut squash trail and will either find their own support, go up any support you provide or just wander along the ground.  They can actually provide quite good shade at the roots of other plants like beans or sweetcorn.

I only grew courgettes last year for the first time and planted 6 in a 6ft x 6ft compost heap.  they overtook it, so would only plant 4 in that place this year.  But on The Big Dig programme, a woman grew her courgettes up 4 canes put in the ground at 4 points of a square and tied at the top wigwam style, I think she said it was how the French did it, so I'm going to try that this year to try to save on space a bit.

Thanks for that - I'm growing sweetcorn too so I'll try putting a couple in with them.

The best butternut squashes I grew last year came from the plant that went wandering off up into a jungle old reaspberries, blackberries and blackcurrants.

The jungle has gone this year so they are going to get a frame.
