French Beans
« on: July 29, 2009, 21:18 »
Hello all

I am new to growing my own veg (very excited) and just need a little advice.

I have planted some French bean seedings in little seed pots.  They have come on very well and I think they need repotting now.  As I don't have a garden I need to put them into pots.  What size pots shall I use and how many plants shall I put into one pot?  Also shall I introduce them to the outside gradually?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

I would plant them in the biggest pot you can lay your hands on (at least 12-18") and fill with the contents of a grow bag., then poke some canes in around the edges of the pot, and pinch together at the top with some twine or wire (to make a nice cone for support)..... Then keep them well watered. ;)

I've done what Bombers is suggesting, and have about 4 plants in one pot of 15" or so.  Canes are tied together at the top, make sure there's lots of extra nutrients like fish blood and bone or something, as they are hungry crops.  And lots of water.  Pinch out the beans when they reach the top of the canes, or just a bit above, and they will probably sprout from lower down (that's what mine seem to want to do).

P.S. Welcome to the site.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Another alternative would be a long, deep (plastic) window-box style trough.

If they are climbing french-beans and you have an empty wall some netting or cheap trellis with the trough at the base should work well.

Biggest task will be making sure the soil doesn't dry out too much. Add some fertilizer as you plant as they will probably use up the nutirents in compost quite quickly.

Best of luck!!  ;)

How much space do you have? I've found that you get much better results with a few large containers, rather than lots of little pots which are very difficult to manage in hot weather.
Are they climbers or dwarf? You get a lot more per suare foot from climbers.

Thanks Everyone  :D

I like the idea of making a cone shape out of the canes in large pots.  Off to do that this morning.

Thanks for the tips on fertilizing.

Next i'm going to plant some pak choi.  I have also just planted some carrots, salad stuff and herbs.

I'd love to plant some potatoes but am I too late now?

You could try Wong Bok (Chinese cabbage) which has lots of uses including stir-fry, steaming and using as salad leaves.  ;)
