Onions do not want/need mollycoddling - they are not harmed by a frost.

Now that I can use t'internet properly, here's apicture of the onions I mentioned which appear to be 'wilting' over...i've tied them up, but I'm not sure it will make much difference....see what you think.... :(

We have already ascertained that you caused the legginess by clocheing them.  You do not need to cloche onion sets.

Is this happening to sets which have been planted outdoors?  Or did either of you try starting them off inside?

Mine were started under cloches, from sets.. Do you think that will make a difference :D  :D

I suggested staking 'cos that's what a lot of competition growers do......never know it could work and save the crop.

I think I'll dig them up then, given that they are all long and thin and put some beans in instead.... does anyone think the onions are worthkeeping or not?..... :?

Seems drastic given that you've done all the remedial work & I'm sure you'll get a worthwhile crop.  My suggestions were really more to save you work next year.

Absolutely, yes.  If you do lose one or two to a cold snap, then you can always stick a dwarf bean, or a lettuce in the gap.
