The right thing to do though Mark, and I'm glad you made that decision

They can be quite nerve racking animals to look after Mark.

As a rule of thumb - If they look poorley they are VERY ill.  Animals of prey will hide illness so that they don't get chosen for food by the lions

So sorry to read about your troubles Mark.  Very sad indeed.  Hope I never have the same, but obviously, thinking what would I do if I did.
Probably straight down to the vets.  Wouldn't have a clue how to despatch a hen, and probably wouldn't be in a fit state to do it anyway.
When we have any animal related tragedy, the vet has the problem of dealing with me too. I'm just hopeless at that sort of thing.
Hope I don't sound patronising, but credit where it's due, it must have been awful for you.

You did all you could Mark and it sounds like she was ready to die you just helped her.
I too have had to cull its not easy but when treatment fails to improve them its the only way.
Not all vets know about hens but will treat anyway its their job. My advice is to ring around and find one that knows you can always ring for advice thats just the cost of a phone call.
I wish you well with the other hens and hope it has not put your daughter off hens they are great fun.

Can you feed them too much?

Thanks to the empathetic group that made very nice comments. My other two chickens are doing really well and laying regularly.
Just wondered can you give chickens too many pellets. They dont eat all I put out each day, just a thought that if the eggs get too big that may cause problems for them laying. Or is just all natural, and let it happen..........
Cheers  8)

Pellets should just be left for them to eat ad lib.  I think the feeder I use must contain at well over a week's supply.  I just top it up once a week.
