Duck training advice
« on: July 12, 2009, 17:08 »
Hi,

I have 2 3 week old ducks that have just started spending daylights hours in what will be their full time enclosure just returning to the garage and the head lamp at night.

The duck house is raised by about 18-20 inches with a tiered ramp which is about 6 inches wide.
I was wondering what is the best way to train them to use the ramp I have tried putting chopped tomatoes on all the way up but that just reach for the nearby bits then ignore the bits they can't.
The other option was to put them in the house and see if they can made their way down but i am concerned they could off and damage their legs etc.

any ideas would be great!

I think I would put them in the house first thing in the morning and then let them make their own way out to the run :)

Leave food / tomatoes in view from the door and they'll be fine :D

I did what Sarah suggests by putting them in the house as it is much easier for them to get out than get in. Once they have worked out how to get down the ramp it is a doddle for them to get up it. I wouldn't worry about it too much till they are sleeping in the house at night and then you can just put them to bed at night to begin with and let them find their way down in the morning. Took mine about a week to work out how to take themselves up to bed at night.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
