Sometimes, if I forget about a bag of spuds in my cupboard/veg rack, they chit.  Or basically, get shoots.

Can I plant these to grow spuds for Christmas in the same way I would tubers?

I don't see why not. You've nothing to lose especially if you have a greenhouse or conservatory to help with the temperature and some spare compost and pots or bags. Good luck and give it a go!!!

Elcie is right in that it is advised always to use certified seed tubers which have been screened for viruses.  Potatoes from the supermarket are not always of a variety which is suitable for this country (more commonly in the winter), and are not certified to be free from disease.  You will always find someone who says they put their supermarket spuds in and did fine, it's a question of whether you want to take the risk.
