Problem with Roxy
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:41 »
Hi all
Got what looks like an unhappy chuck. Have jut moved them to a new location in the garden with loads of grass to munch on and the other two chucks are happy as can be but Roxy is hunched, slow, not really interested in food and has a mucky bum. Any suggestions?????
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark, I'm sorry to say that it sounds like she has a cold. In my experience they find it hard to get over it, and if this bird is a hybrid, i.e. battery hen type, then she will find it a lot harder and probably die very soon. Most other birds will be fine after a few days. Give her a chance to come round, and in the meantime I would probably seperate them, just to be on the safe side. Im sorry its not a good reply (what I mean is, maybe not what you wanted to hear), but what you seek is honesty, and in my experience (3yrs now), I have also had this happen to me. I would feed plenty of wheat to keep her warm, and some layers pellets to give her nutrients, always clean water and give her plenty of straw, try to keep her place clean. Good luck Mark, I hope she pulls round for you.

Hi BigMark

You say you've moved them on to fresh grass, is it long grass?

Have you felt at her crop? should be empty when you let them out in the morning :)

Have you ever wormed them?

Sarah :)

Hi Sarah
it was about 2 weeks growth on the grass so quite long, they were wormed when i purchased them about 3 months ago and have been mite powdered once a month.

something else I have noticed this morning is that she keeps going in and out of their house.

She maybe has a soft or a rough egg to pass.  One of my girls gets really hunched up and goes off her food until she has passed whatever was bothering her.

make sure she is eating her pellets and not stuffing herself on that lovely grass! add a little poultry spice to their feed, plus a teaspoon of cod liver oil to help her calcium levels. Finally have they got adlib access to oyster shell? :)

poultry spice is a mineral supplement and contains elements useful in moulting, when chooks are a bit under the weather or may have egg laying blips. I mix it in with food and and a teaspoon of codliver oil which helps absorption. :)
