TOMATOES HELP NEEDED
« on: June 21, 2009, 13:16 »
Hello, I'm new to this, so please overlook any mistakes.
PROBLEM: Am growing tomatoes in greenhouse (for first time), and everything
was going very well. Plenty of tomatoes, starting to ripen. Then CATASTROPHE !!
3 whole trusses of tomatoes found on the floor, torn off by weight of tomatoes.
2 questions: am I overwatering, or doing something wrong, causing weak truss stems?
How to prevent the others coming off? (tried tying them up, but thats not easy).
By the way: cordon plants "MONTFAVERT", which are normal-size tomatoes, with about 7 or 8 fruit per truss.
All and any help gratefully received: I havent got that much hair left, and cant afford to pull any more out   :(.

Welcome to the site tode, sorry to hear about your toms

I've moved this over to the GYO forum so more veggie people will see it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not a tomato grower, just have a few plants and I tend to grow the small fruit varieties, and all mine are still small :( :( :(.

It may be a terrible way to put it  ??? but I suspect that you have done nothing wrong and have been quite successful. Just too many nice big tomatoes on a truss.

Hopefully someone that grows tomatoes more seriously and under similar circumstances will be able to offer more information.

Welcome to the site Tode, i am sure there are plenty of tom growers on here to help you out.

Tbh i wish i had your problem i have only 1 small tom on 1 plant i have 9 on the go  ::)

Well here is my guess at a soloution for you, maybe you could get some mini trellis for them to grow up and tie up in a few more places.

Or even pick the toms a bit earlier and ripen off on the window cill (i do believe they continue to ripen like this) but i am just a first year grower myself.

Good luck

my 32 tom plants in 3 greenhouses are tied to canes , then made a interlocking grid of canes 1ft  gap betwen each row , 5 rows up from greenhouse floor,

we growing 6 varieties of tomatpoes , alicante have took off , 4ft high  with 4 to9 5 trusses on each plant,

can always support trusses with twine in between the canes if needed

good luck

I am going to guess you're growing F1 Shirley toms as this is quite a common problem.

The solution is to tie a loop of string around the stem of the plant just above the first leaf above a heavy truss, down and around the truss itself - making sure you tie it tight enough that it lifts the truss slightly, thus transferring some of the weight back to the stem.

I've not written that brilliantly but I'm sure you'll get the picture!

Many Shirley growers do this as a matter of course with every truss.

Howard.

Thanks for the reminder! Some of my tomato plants are carrying very heavy trusses and I have known them break off.

All is not lost for the ones that landed on the ground.  They will ripen indoors.

Cheers,

Gillie

Thanks to everyone for advice. Tried your solution Howard, and its a lot simpler than stringing them up (Western style !) from roof. Am goig to try same thing with insulated wire. Its making all the little knots that gets me hot and bovvered.
I always thought ripeneing green tomatoes on window-sill was a 2nd rate solution, but the few Ive put out seem to taste better than those freshly picked. Strange
Thanks again.

I've seen Tomato Truss Supports, but always thought of them as a gadget - and one that I didn't need at that.

maybe I've just never grown mine well enough to be have large enough trusses :(
